Painful to listen to the cuckoo’s crying because it is so sad

Gwangpungheon / Jagyuru Pavilion

(984-3, Yeongheung-ri, Yeongwol-eup, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do)

The hotel that was built near the Yeongwol Government office in the early Joseon Dynasty is called Gwanpungheon. It is a big building with three houses side by side. In the summer of 1456, when there was a big flood in Cheongryeongpo, King Danjong moved where he was staying to Gwanpungheon.
This place was where King Danjong received the poison as death penalty ordered by King Sejo. King Danjong ended his short life at a young age of 17, which was on October 24, 1457.
There is a two-storey pavilion in front of Gwanpungheon called Jagyuru Pavilion. In 1431 during the reign of King Sejong, Kwon Geun Shin was the Yeongwol governor established the pavilion, which was first called Maejukru Pavilion. When King Danjong moved to Gwanpungheon, he went up the pavilion to write a heartbreaking poem filled with the cuckoo(Jagyu)’s sorrow. Afterwards, the name was changed from Maejukru Pavilion to Jagyuru Pavilion.
