The place where King Danjong’s maids threw themselves into Donggang River like petals falling down
Minchungsa / Nahwaam
(77, Yeongheung-ri, Yeongwol-eup, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwo-do)
When King Danjong received the poison as death penalty and passed away, the maids, midservants and other aides, including 6 female shamans and 1 attendant, who served him died with him out of loyalty. This is the shrine dedicated to them.
After King Danjong’s body was thrown away in Donggang River, the maids who served King Danjong jumped to their death after him from the tall cliff of Donggang River with skirts wrapped around their faces. This looked almost like petals falling down, which is why it was called Nakhwaam.
During the reign of King Yeongjo, Yeong Bo Hong established a shrine in 1742. Afterwards, Busa Eung Bok Kim named the shrine as Minchungsa in 1749. The memorial service is held two times during Hansik and Gisinje on October 24.
